It is Christmas and we are getting really to the end of the year. Christmas time is time to spend with the loved ones, but it is also the perfect time to look back on this past year. What happens is that a lot of people start looking forward to the next year, which is great, but they don’t take the time to evaluate the year that comes to an end. And actually this is very important as you may figure out what you have accomplished and what improvements yo still need to make.
If you decide to evaluate your year, I want to help you with the questions that best answer to get the most out of your evaluation.
The first question you should ask yourself is “What have I accomplished this year?”. Not only look at what you have achieved professionally, but also on a personal level. And small accomplishments certainly do also count.
The second question is “What did I not accomplish this year?”. You probably want to achieve certain things that, at the end, you did not do. When answering this question, ask yourself the reasons why you have not accomplished them. This is not to blame you, not at all, but to give you an inside what the obstacles are that prevented you to achieve it. Knowing the obstacles will give you the chance of doing the necessary steps to overcome them and accomplish the things you want.
The next question is “What am I most proudest of?” The answer to this question will motivate you and give you the drive to continue and grow next year.
Also ask yourself “Who am I grateful for this year?” “Who should I thank for the great year that I have had?” Being grateful and thanking other people for their support and help will give these persons the motivation to continue at your side.
The next question is “What have I learned this year that will help me and my business to grow?” Every action that you take or not take is a learning point. We have constantly learning points in our lives, but if we don’t learn from them, you won’t grow.
And finally, and this is a big one, “If I could do this year over again, what would I do the same and what would I do differently?” The points you list that you would do the same, continue doing them. On the other hand, the points you list that you would do differently, ask yourself in what way you would do them differently, and then start applying these changes.
Take your time doing this evaluation. Next time I’ll guide you through how to best plan for the coming year.
